PROPOSED GUIDELINES FOR FEEDBACK FROM ODIN (3/14/2007)

I wanted to solicit feedback on what some good general guidelines about Open Space are to share with folks (to offer in both “blurb” and “guidelines list” format on Day One, at the start of Day Two). This would be printed in the CS8 "passport", explained as preview (Day One) and preparation (Day Two), and posted on the Open Space wall:

Blurb

Open Space is an exciting opportunity to be truly collective, in that the topics and conversations that comprise are our day are proposed and shaped by all of us. Many have offered Community Contributions prior to our coming together, and there are Learning Circles as part of LLC which provide opportunities for ongoing learning in a geographic area (i.e. New York), topic (i.e. Evaluation) or affinity group (i.e. Funders) some of LLC’s Learning Circles, which provide opportunities for ongoing learning in a geographic area (i.e. New York) or interest area (i.e. Evaluation or Health), will also convene during this time. While these will be offered during our Open Space time, suggestions from all of you about a topic that you find important are welcomed and all Open Space offerings build upon and shape our learning.

Guidelines Lists

The process for setting up Open Space includes:

q      Picking Suggesting a topic that is meaningful to you and that you’d like to discuss/share with others.

q      Clearly defining a title and offering a ONE SENTENCE description of the session.

q      Picking a start time, duration and location for your conversation.

q      Writing this title and description on a piece of paper (provided) to post on the Open Space wall

q      Placing the session on the Open Space wall in a particular time slot, in an available location

q      PLEASE BE SURE to remove the session if you are done, so that no one tries to find a session that has ended!

Here are some pointers for successful navigation of Open Space:

q      “Whoever shows up is who is supposed to be there”…you might have one person, or ten, or no one.

q      The “Law of Two FeetLaw of Open Space Learning": this isn’t a conference, and you’re not locked into a session. If you want to go explore some other topic, feel free. [I have facilitated three Open Space convenings where there were folks in wheelchairs present and I changed the language on the fly to “The Law of Open Space Learning.”  It’s not so catchy...perhaps you’ll think of something better...!]

q      You don’t have to facilitate the entire session. Perhaps you plant a seed, participate for awhile and move on to another session…

q      Butterfly or Flower? Some people choose to plant themselves in one place, explore an issue and provide seeds and pollen for others who join. Others fly from session to session making connections for themselves and others.

q      Check the OS wall to see what’s concluded, and what’s still taking place.

q      Please prepare a brief, creative way of sharing your learning with the rest of the group: no flipchart presentations or classic summary report-backs. Get creative!

q      Other navigation ideas?

Material Needs for Open Space:

q      Existing community contributions already printed in large format on 8.5 x 11 sheets

q      Additional 8.5x11 sheets for more session ideas

q      Open Space guidelines (process and navigation) written/printed on large sheets for OS wall.

q      Sticky wall or other way of defining/creating the OS wall/schedule.

q      Markers for writing up/crossing out sessions

There are a number of presenters who have prepared proposals and it is likely that there will be more who will want to offer. Will there be any preliminary posting of topics or will it all be done during the event?
